PETE Hostel Project
Poverty Eradication Through Education
HOSTEL PROJECT
AIM
As we cater to the hereafter, we must not lose focus of the here and now. There are many aspects of community service that can be addressed to improve the living conditions of our fellow humans.
Our short term measures include the provision of regular foodstuff to the poor and needy around us. Our medium term efforts include arranging for employment for those in need of employment to take care of their families. Ultimately, if we want to change the mindset and improve a generation, it must be by education.
It is with this in mind, that we have embarked on this long term PETE Hostel Project. This was launched in 2009.
The primary aim of this project is to change the mindset of a whole generation by way of education. The focus is to change the atmosphere where the children are living and studying. The home conditions of these students are not conducive to studying.
As such the focus is to place them in a hostel where they can have a very healthy and conducive atmosphere to study.
At this hostel, while the educational needs of the children are taken care of, their other physical and spiritual needs are not ignored. They will be groomed to be complete human beings who, in turn will be providers of aid and encouragement and not merely recipients of aid and encouragement.
CURRENT STATUS
As at 01.01.2011, we have thirteen students (10 girls & 3 boys) who are in Standard 4, Forms 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. These children are located in two hostels – one for boys and the other for girls. They meet in a common place for studies and their meals and are all enrolled in the same school, except for 2 students.
While we are yet to get a suitable live-in caretaker, Victoria Packianathan is taking care of them on a voluntary basis. She lives in with them and takes care of all their needs, including discipline, just as a mother would.
These children have also been taken to various places of interest around Kuala Lumpur and have also been treated to special meals outside. All these activities have been organized through the initiative of Victoria who has sacrificed a lot of time and effort to ensure the well-being of these children. The children’s birthdays are also celebrated regularly and the cake is always sponsored by Victoria.
While their educational and physical needs are addressed, their spiritual needs are not neglected in order for them to become well adjusted citizens of Malaysia.
LONG TERM GOAL
With the whole hearted support of the government, we look forward to having a piece of land where a more permanent structure that can accommodate more children and also have proper facilities for physical activities can be put up for community service where the primary focus will still be education.
